18 years... and counting!

How can one man be so blessed?  It was pretty much over for me the first day I saw her at the Alta High School Gym.  The big permed hair, blown out bangs, and stirrup pants.  Boy, those were the days.  Like any good predator, I saw my prey and hunted her down.  First a stop by the "White House" on Luna Way, then some admittedly awkward teenage phone conversations.  I was smitten!

As we look back on on our pictures together, me in the Girbaud Jeans and Generra Shirts (thanks Mervyn's), she in her White Mountain shoes and designer sweaters, it is crazy how young we were.  Young and in love.  Driving to Midway in the gold Grand Prix, counting change at Jamsey, or just being together; those were good days.  She was 16 going on 17, minus the gazebo.

22 years later we are still connected at the hip.  Older, grayer, and as happy as ever.  My favorite place to be is always next to her.  Instead of counting change, we count the minutes until all of the kids are in bed, looking forward to the peace that a quiet house brings.

We spent the weekend in Scottsdale, far enough away to feel like we were on a short vacay but close enough in case any tragedy struck at home.  Dinners at La Grande Orange and Roaring Fork.  Eggs Benedict for breakfast.  Shopping and more shopping.  One good movie and an extremely forgettable one.  Sleeping in until 7:15.  Lots of reading.  Totally unstructured, just the way we like our time away.  Eat when you are hungry, sleep when you're tired.  Sometimes it is refreshing to just let life happen, rather than always be directing it.

We have been striking this pose for the better part of 22 years together.  Denise loves the feeling of having me believe that I am in control of her, even for a fleeting moment.  I know better.  She has been the guide for me for so many years and I am blessed to have her as friend, confidante, lovebird, and partner.  She is my superior in just about everything we do.  Wouldn't be where we are without each other; I am so much the better for having her in my life.  Every day is an anniversary for me of the best things in life... my little lady and our ever growing love.  Smooches to my besty!
